Penalty for failing to file a tax return
The price of the most common closure mistake — assuming the closure filing was the last thing to do and waiting for the tax office to write. It is a penalty on the unreported tax rather than a flat fee, so it scales with the size of the return that was missed, and late-payment interest accrues on top of it independently.
- Applies to
- Taxpayers who do not file a return by the statutory deadline, including a final VAT return after closing a business
- Review cadence
- Checked once a year
What we have recorded
- 2026-10-0620% of the unreported tax
The ordinary rate. It is heavier where the non-filing is treated as improper, and a separate late-payment penalty runs on the unpaid tax for as long as it is unpaid. Filing late but voluntarily can reduce the penalty; being assessed does not.

One reading so far. This becomes a history the first time the figure moves while we are watching — which is the part that cannot be reconstructed later.
