NHIS: overseas stay required for premium exemption
One of three similar-looking periods in cross-border insurance that come from entirely different instruments, and the one people apply to the wrong scheme. This is public insurance law, not a private policy term, and it carries a condition nothing else does: a workplace subscriber with dependants remaining in Korea is not exempted merely by being abroad. Kept in its own record precisely so it cannot be collapsed into the private-insurance suspension period, which is also three months and is a different thing entirely.
- Applies to
- National health insurance subscribers staying outside Korea, subject to the dependants condition
- Review cadence
- Checked once a year
What we have recorded
- 2026-10-043 months
The general period of overseas stay for premium exemption. A workplace subscriber is exempted where there is no dependant residing in Korea — so a posting abroad with a spouse and children still using the scheme here does not produce a zero premium. Exemption from premiums and the status itself are also distinct questions, and returning to Korea and receiving benefits in a month can create an exception for that month.

One reading so far. This becomes a history the first time the figure moves while we are watching — which is the part that cannot be reconstructed later.
