Housing deductions available to a foreign resident employee

3 — rent loan principal and interest, long-term mortgage interest, monthly rent creditnumber of housing-related deductions open to qualifying foreign residents

The clearest case on this site of a rule change quietly turning old guidance into misinformation. Guides written before 2021 say a foreign employee cannot claim housing deductions because they cannot be a head of household under the resident registration system, and that sentence is still being copied years after it stopped being true. Anyone following it hands back deductions they were entitled to.

3 — rent loan principal and interest, long-term mortgage interest, monthly rent creditCurrent

A qualifying foreign resident may claim repayment of principal and interest on a housing rental loan, interest on a long-term mortgage, and the monthly rent tax credit. The 2026 National Tax Service comparison marks housing funds and the monthly rent credit as available to foreign residents. Each still carries its own conditions on income, home ownership, property size and whose name the contract is in.
